Spring Lawn Care Guide for Sugar Land & Missouri City TX

Spring lawn care Sugar Land TX

If your lawn is starting to wake up and you have not yet called your lawn care company — now is the time. Late April in Sugar Land and Missouri City is one of the most important windows of the entire year for your lawn. What you do in the next four to six weeks sets the foundation for how your yard looks all the way through October.

At Lawn John we have been maintaining residential lawns in Sugar Land and Missouri City since 1994. Here is exactly what we recommend for late April and early May in our specific climate.

Why Late April Is Critical

Soil temperatures in Sugar Land and Missouri City have warmed enough that warm-season grasses like St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia are actively coming out of dormancy and beginning their most aggressive growth period of the year. Daytime temperatures are still mild enough that new growth is not being stressed by extreme heat.

This is your best opportunity to get ahead of your lawn rather than chasing it all summer. Miss this window and you spend June through August playing catch-up.

Mowing — Start Now and Get the Height Right

If you have not mowed yet this season your grass has likely reached a height where it needs attention immediately. Letting warm-season grass get too tall before the first mow of the season causes scalping issues and stresses the turf.

For St. Augustine — the most common grass in Sugar Land and Missouri City — mow at 3.5 to 4 inches. Maintaining that height helps shade the soil, retain moisture, and crowd out weeds naturally. Cutting too short stresses the turf and invites chinch bugs, which are already active in our area by late April.

For Bermuda grass mow at 1.5 to 2 inches. Bermuda is aggressive this time of year and will need weekly mowing through October.

Fertilization — The April Window Is Open

Late April is the ideal time for your first fertilizer application of the season in Sugar Land and Missouri City. Soil temperatures are consistently above 65 degrees by mid-April — the threshold where warm-season grasses can actually absorb and use the nutrients you apply.

Applying fertilizer too early is money wasted. The nutrients leach out before the grass can use them. Applying at the right time drives the thick dark green growth that makes Sugar Land and Missouri City lawns look their best heading into summer.

For most residential lawns we recommend a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in late April followed by a second application in late June or early July. Slow-release formulas feed the lawn consistently over six to eight weeks rather than creating a surge of growth that stresses the turf when heat arrives.

Weed Control — Act Before Summer Heat Sets In

Late April is your last good window for weed control effectiveness before summer annual weeds like crabgrass and sandbur fully establish. The most common weeds we see in Sugar Land and Missouri City lawns this time of year are clover, oxalis, and early crabgrass. Spot treating now is far more effective than managing a full summer infestation in July.

This is also the right time to apply fresh mulch to your beds. Two to three inches applied now suppresses weed germination through the summer and reduces your watering needs significantly during the hot months ahead.

Irrigation — Check Your System Now

By late May you will be running your irrigation system regularly. Late April is the right time to run a full system check — verify each zone is working, look for broken or misaligned heads, and make sure your controller is programmed for the new season.

Common issues we find after winter include cracked heads from freeze damage and controllers still set to winter scheduling that are underwatering an actively growing lawn. A poorly functioning system in May leads to brown patches in June that require costly repair or resodding by July.

Watch for Chinch Bugs

Chinch bugs are the most destructive lawn pest for St. Augustine grass in Sugar Land and Missouri City and they become active when temperatures are consistently above 70 degrees — which is right now. If you see irregular patches of yellowing or browning St. Augustine that do not respond to watering, especially near curbs or driveways in sunny areas, suspect chinch bugs and treat immediately. Waiting even two weeks allows a small infestation to destroy large sections of turf.

Seasonal Color — Install Now

Late April through May is the best time to install summer annuals for color in your beds. Warm-season annuals like pentas, vinca, angelonia, and portulaca thrive in our heat and will provide continuous color from now through October.

If you want your property to stand out heading into summer now is the time to get seasonal color installed before the heat makes establishment more difficult.

Your Late April Checklist

Begin weekly mowing at the correct height for your grass type. Apply your first slow-release fertilizer application. Treat any actively growing weeds now. Add fresh mulch to landscape beds. Run a full irrigation system check. Watch for early chinch bug activity in St. Augustine lawns. Install summer seasonal color for best results.
